As the younger Oarland sibling, Ansel was cared for by her older brother, Renault, when their planet was ravaged by war. As she grew older, she felt more of a debt to her brother than she could repay. As a result, she resolved that she'd be strong on her own terms, and strong she became. Headstrong and confident, she lets any opponent believe that she leaps before looking in order to use that to her advantage.

As of the beginning of the story's events, her and her brother served on the crew of space pirate, Captain Vanessa Dundee, before a botched mission landed Renault and field-medic Steve in custody. With Dundee wanting to abandon the two to their fate, Ansel steals one of Dundee's favorite ships to launch a rescue mission.
